Earn your B.A. in Multiplatform Journalism

As a multiplatform journalism major, you will be prepared to work as a multimedia journalist across a wide variety of platforms, from online news sites to traditional print and broadcast outlets. Today's journalist must be multifaceted鈥攁 reporter at an online news outlet might, in a single day, shoot video, produce an audio story and write several iterations of a story for a website and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Conversely, a reporter at a broadcast station or cable outlet might produce both visual and written versions of a story. 

Our multiplatform journalism program equips you with the knowledge and skills to produce content for any platform and allows you to seize opportunities as new platforms emerge. In this program, you'll learn to interview, research, report, write, shoot and edit audio and video; create graphics; and master social media.

With a multiplatform journalism degree, you will have the skills needed to achieve your bigger goals, regardless of industry or area of expertise within the journalism realm and will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of news and the role it plays in our civic and political culture.

  • Develop the ability to evaluate the newsworthiness of events.

  • Study and internalize the public service functions and ethical obligations of journalism.

  • Develop and apply a variety of reporting techniques, including interviewing, database research and use of public records.

  • Produce multiplatform stories for news, sports, entertainment and various niche genres.

  • Learn and practice narrative, video, audio and graphical storytelling techniques that are applicable across a wide variety of platforms, including print, broadcast, web, social media and emerging web-based and mobile platforms.

  • Learn within an ethos of adaptability so that, as media platforms and techniques change, students are able to change with them鈥攁nd possess the theoretical knowledge and practical flexibility to lead that change.

Transfer student Emily Fritz, A'25, discovered multiplatform journalism 鈥� and a community she didn't want to leave. So she stayed an extra semester to earn the minor, doubled her workload, and wrote 88 stories along the way.

How You Can Build a Portfolio and Career

Kaitlyn Hughes, A鈥�26, is building the skills needed for a career in journalism through hands-on reporting and multimedia storytelling. As a student journalist with The 福利免费毛片 Duke, she has covered campus and community stories while developing experience in interviewing, deadline writing, and digital media production. Through Liberal Arts' horizon-expanding education, Kaitlyn has gained practical newsroom experience that supports her bigger goals in journalism and communication.

鈥淭hrough my time at The Duke, I have been able to gain meaningful experiences that will help me excel at the professional level,鈥� Kaitlyn said. 鈥淪tudent journalism allows me to get into the community, build relationships with sources and write on deadline.鈥�

Her work with the student newspaper helped her earn the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship, which supported a summer internship with Trib Total Media and guaranteed her employment with the organization following graduation. Hughes also received the Roy McHugh Prize in Writing Excellence for her commitment to strong storytelling and journalistic writing. These experiences that transform help students connect classroom learning with professional media experience.

The 18-credit multiplatform journalism minor can be a great addition to your major coursework, whether your major is inside or outside of the College of Liberal Arts!

Note: Sports information & media students cannot minor in multiplatform journalism.
