John C. Mitcham is a historian of the British Empire, with a particular focus on settler colonialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His first book, Race and Imperial Defence in the British World 1870-1914 (Cambridge University Press, 2016), examines the cultural links between Britain and the self-governing Dominions of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The book argues that a shared and highly racialized concept of "Britishness" gradually led to closer relations within the white portions of the empire, particularly in the realm of defense cooperation.

His second book, The Empire Club: Imperial Politics, White Supremacy, and the Making of the British Commonwealth will appear with Oxford University Press later this year. The Empire Club uncovers the hidden world of politicians, powerbrokers, and colonial elites who quietly reinvented the British Empire in the early twentieth century. At the center of the story are the Dominion statesmen: Canada鈥檚 grimly determined Robert Borden, Australia鈥檚 fiery and unpredictable Billy Hughes, New Zealand鈥檚 implacable William Massey, and South Africa鈥檚 鈥減hilosopher general鈥� Jan Smuts. Together with David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill, they pursued an ambitious and racially charged vision of a white, English鈥憇peaking 鈥淕reater Britain鈥濃�攐ne they believed could withstand the pressures of an increasingly unsettled world.

Drawing on archival research in seven countries and dozens of personal collections, The Empire Club reveals an imperial community held together less by constitutional blueprints than by personal relationships and shared racial anxieties. It鈥檚 a story of complex personalities, private diplomacy, and the powerful illusions of Britishness that bound a sprawling empire together, until finally swept away by the rising tide of anti-colonialism and Decolonization.

His current book project is tentatively titled 鈥淭he American Civil War, the British Empire, and the Global Struggle for Freedom.鈥� The project examples how colonial subjects in places like Jamaica, India, Australia, and South Africa engaged with wartime debates about slavery, secession, capitalism, and democracy. In particular, the project seeks to understand how American claims about freedom and liberty undermined British notions of an inherently benevolent and liberal empire. 

 John is the former General Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Britain and the World (published by Edinburgh University Press) and is an Elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.  He is active in a number of professional organizations, including the North American Conference on British Studies, Britain and the World, and the Society of Military History. He has been interviewed by venues such as Politico and Australian Public Radio, and has delivered talks throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia.
