Residency Programs at the ¸£ÀûÃâ·ÑëƬ School of Pharmacy first formed as one-year
academic and research fellowships to prepare pharmacists in practice for careers in
academia and eventually expanded into PGY1 programs in community and pharmacy practice
setting with all programs now being accredited through the American Society of Health
System Pharmacists and the American Pharmacist Association.
Residency Programs at ¸£ÀûÃâ·ÑëƬ's School of Pharmacy seek to address changes in the
pharmacy profession, further educate student pharmacists and better facilitate the
transition to licensed pharmacist, and offer unique clinical experiences with experienced
practitioners and faculty.
Through a variety of PGY1 and PGY2 experiences in community, ambulatory, and acute
care, preceptors and program directors prepare program residents to advance the profession
of pharmacy by:
Serving as role models in advanced areas of practice to which they aspire
Training and challenging them to improve patient care through exposure to inter-professional
advanced practice
Mentoring through teaching experiences to educate pharmacy students in the future
Directing research projects that will enable them to contribute to the professional
literature
Incentivizing them to further their own education and training to pursue PGY2 experiences,
and/or to secure future academic or clinical practice positions
PGY1 Community Practice Residency Match Code:23035
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes
to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined
in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully
complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice
management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek
board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education
and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
PGY1 Long-Term Care Pharmacy Residency Match Code:23044

PGY2 Residency Programs
UPMC Mercy PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Match Code:777456
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education
and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical
pharmacists in advanced or specialized practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents
with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and
integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision
of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete
an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them
for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible
for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area. This will
be accomplished through multiple advanced clinical practice experiences on internal
medicine, infectious diseases, medical ICU and transitions of care with a variety
of elective opportunities ranging from academia to emergency medicine. In addition, there are required longitudinal rotations in leadership, research, and
medication safety. The resident will spend a rotation in the medical intensive care unit if a rotation
has not been completed in this setting as a PGY1.
The resident will participate as a primary preceptor with student pharmacists in advanced
pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) from the ¸£ÀûÃâ·ÑëƬ School of Pharmacy.
The resident will demonstrate professional maturity by developing a personal philosophy
of practice, monitoring and evaluating their own performance and exhibiting commitment
to the profession. The resident will adhere to the ¸£ÀûÃâ·ÑëƬ Mission and
Vision while supporting the School of Pharmacy in their strategic plan.
A ¸£ÀûÃâ·ÑëƬ School of Pharmacy faculty member and internal medicine clinical
pharmacy specialist serves as the residency program director, and is actively engaged
in the provision of clinical services and scholarship related to internal medicine
pharmacy practice. The resident should be highly motivated and dedicated to gaining
the skills to serve as a leader in the profession after completion of the program.
The School of Pharmacy is located in downtown Pittsburgh, just a 10 minute walk from
UPMC Mercy Hospital. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the resident will have
opportunities to teach at the University through lectures and labs and will serve
as a preceptor for advanced pharmacy practice experiences teaching of Doctor of Pharmacy
candidates. Residents will also gain experience in teaching and research methodologies.
The resident will also spend 1/2 day on campus every week for classroom engagement. A
research project of publishable and presentable quality is required by completion
of the program.
